By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The three-day Belize Archaeological Symposium (BAS) organized by the Institute of Archaeology (NICH) Belize starts today June 29 at the San Ignacio Hotel in San Ignacio, Cayo.

The Belize Archaeological Symposium features 38 presentations concentrating on two themes: ‘Transformation, Transitional Expressions, and Adaptations during Critical Period of Ancient Maya Civilization’ and ‘Archaeology in Belize: Research Investigation Results’.

“The Belize Archaeology Symposium (BAS) is recognized as the leading source for current archaeological information in Belize,” said the Institute of Archaeology (IA).

“The primary objective of the Belize Archaeological Symposium is to disseminate current archaeological information to the people of Belize, the tourism industry and the general archaeological and anthropological community. It is envisioned that the conference will provide an interdisciplinary arena that will allow students, staff, faculty, and practitioners to discuss and exchange ideas about the latest developments in the field.”

“The IA continues to promote and foster research in areas such as Maya, Colonial, Underwater and Cave archeology as well as in the Archaic, Paleo-Indian, Historic periods in Belize.”

This year, the Institute of Archeology is observing the 18th anniversary of the annual BAS, which was on hold for two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Researchers and their students have also shown great interest in having poster displays over the three days of the symposium,” said the Institute of Archaeology.

The IA said the BAS is an avenue for archaeologists, students, tour guides, and other aficionados to discuss and exchange ideas on their current research and the latest developments in archaeology.

With that consideration students who present a valid ID have free entrance to the BAS. Belizean attendees will pay Bz$10 per day and foreign attendees Bz$20 per day.

The Institute of Archaeology said general attendance registration starts at 7:30 am daily though online pre-registration is preferred. To pre-register click here.

Lectures start at 8:30 am. The BAS closes on Friday.
