By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On July 8, 2022, U.S. President, Joe Biden signed an executive order aimed at protecting abortion rights, CNN reports.
The move was done in response to the landmark decision by the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
President Biden noted that the order will safeguard access to abortion care and contraceptives. It will also increase public education efforts and bolster the security of and the legal options available to those seeking and those providing abortion services.
In light of the ruling by the Supreme Court, there is no action that President Biden can take to restore abortion rights in the U.S. and he has acknowledged that the options to expand abortion access remain limited.
In addition, President Biden called on the Justice department to do everything they can to protect women seeking to invoke their rights.
Biden said that the decision by the Supreme court to overturn the 1973 ruling was “extreme” and “totally wrongheaded.”
