By Benjamin Flowers: Cabinet Secretary, Ambassador Stuart Leslie, has defended the Government of Belize’s decision to hire community activist Giovannie Brackett as an information consultant for the Government Press Office.
Leslie told the media this week that it is Brackett’s involvement in social issues that prompted the Government to approach him for the consultancy. Brackett, the former president of the Group Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action (COLA), was very vocal during the last government administration. He tackled issues such as poverty and crime, and had a strong stance against taking the Guatemalan territorial dispute to the International Court of Justice.
“I think Giovanni is very qualified and very experienced through his advocacy work in working with some of these social issues. Now, the press office can’t handle everything. There have to be certain consultancies that the press office will hand out, consultancies that deal with some of these social issues,” Ambassador Leslie said.
Leslie also said that it is important for someone in Bracket’s age group to be given the opportunity to begin laying the foundation for the next group of great Belizeans addressing social issues, to take their place among the likes of Nuri Mohhammud and James Murphy.
Brackett is being paid an annual salary of $42,000 plus a monthly telephone allowance of $125 for the two years on his contract. He will also receive a 10 percent gratuity at the end of the contract period.
