Moving to Belize? This Is the Best Place to Live!

Carmelita Gardens

By BBN Staff: Are you thinking about your future? Most of us are coping with the ongoing mutations of COVID-19, increasing inflation, rising gas prices, and a double-threat of rising property costs and mortgage rates. One solution to all of this economic chaos is to relocate to someplace cheaper, perhaps western Belize where the people are chill, life moves at a more languid pace and you have easy access to established and sustainable communities like Carmelita Gardens on the Belize River Valley.

Carmelita Gardens is the 12-year-old project of Phil Hahn, and this rather unique village has done much to attract many North Americans to Belize. That’s right, this place has not only encouraged retirees to relocate but this venue is rife with entrepreneurs, people who traded out the daily grind of their career for a calmer and more remote means of earning a paycheck. Considering the ongoing growth of this amazing community, you would be in excellent company with the other transplants, people who have often welcomed newcomers to this venue that offers a good blend of privacy and communal living.

Options

Since Carmelita Gardens has been around for over a decade, it has grown to the point that it uses a town square that connects various neighborhoods. People have the choice of lots both off and on the waterfront in this surprisingly small-town feeling area. Lots start as small as $39k for a 5k-square foot property while half-acre riverfront property is a steal at $79k; both options mean you will have more than enough money left over to affordable build your dream home. Belize’s real estate continues to be a sizzling market, meaning that properties near the waterfront or major tourist sites remain good investments.

Concerns about adjustment and culture shock are minimal.

  • English is the official language of Belize.
  • Belize uses British law as its basis, just like the US and Canada.
  • The Belizean Dollar (BZD) is locked in value to half that of the US Dollar, i.e. $1 USD equals $2 BZD.

Are you concerned that you might lose touch with friends or miss your family? Belize is just a short flight away from the United States and only a slightly longer flight up to Canada. The fact that Belizean life is relatively cheap to live means that residents have enough cash to afford multiple trips back home to visit loved ones or undergo specialized medical procedures. Property taxes are incredibly affordable in Belize, with a four-bedroom home styled like one in the States costing between $100 and $200 USD.

Getting There

On a note about reaching Belize, while most people have been vaccinated if able, Belize has removed all entry restrictions related to COVID-19. While the country still advises concern as new permutations of the virus-like BA.2 and BA.5 arise, proof of vaccination is no longer required to enter the country and “Belize Travel Health Insurance” has been dialed back from mandatory to optional.
