Taiwan says Chinese aircrafts crossing Taiwan Strait

Posted: Saturday, August 6, 2022. 10:48 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense noted that multiple Chinese aircrafts and vessels were detected today in a possible simulated attack, CNN reports.

China has increased its “military drills” following the visit of U.S. House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan this week.

In addition, Taiwanese officials say that the aircraft and vessels crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait that separates the island from the Chinese mainland.

“Our military has broadcast warnings, deployed combat air patrol and naval vessels and activated land-based missile systems in response to the situation,” the ministry noted.

According to the Ministry, 14 of the 20 aircrafts crossed the median line.

China views Taiwan as its territory and has long vowed to “reunify” the self governing democratic island.

The Chinese President and U.S. President had exchanged warnings before the controversial visit.

However, Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday as part of her tour in Asia.

Since then, China has ramped up efforts with military drills and Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing Wen has called on the international community to express their support for Taiwan.

“Our government & military are closely monitoring China’s military exercises & information warfare operations, ready to respond as necessary. I call on the international community to support democratic Taiwan & halt any escalation of the regional security situation,” President Tsai said.
