‘Grease’ star Olivia Newton-John dies of cancer aged 73

By Aaron Humes: The BBC reports that according to her husband and manager, singer-actress Olivia Newton-John died aged 73 of cancer, passing away “peacefully” at her California ranch on Monday morning.

Newton-John, Australian by birth, achieved commercial success as a country and pop singer with millions of records sold globally. But she is perhaps best known to fans as the shy ingenue Sandy Dee of the 1978 hit musical film “Grease,” who undergoes a makeover to win the heart of Danny Zuko (co-star John Travolta).

In a statement posted to her social media channels, Newton-John’s husband John Easterling hailed her as “a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer,” with which she was diagnosed in the early 1990s. “Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer.” Newton-John became a leading advocate for cancer research and her charity, the Olivia Newton-John Foundation, has raised millions of pounds to support research. Her efforts in the field were recognized by Queen Elizabeth, who honoured her with a Dame in the 2020 New Year’s Honours list.

Travolta wrote on Instagram that she “made all of our lives so much better”. “Your impact was incredible. I love you so much,” he continued. “We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!”
