By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Although U.S. authorities continue to warn migrants of the dangers of taking the journey to the U.S. illegally, many continue to trek north in hopes of finding the “American Dream”.
Last Thursday, officials from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and Mexican officials responded to a large number of people attempting to migrate across the Rio Grande near the city of Eagle Pass, the Guardian reports.
Officials recovered 9 bodies and rescued 37 people from the river.
U.S. officials detained 16 more people and Mexican officials took 39 people into custody.
Officials on both sides of the border continue searching for any possible victims.
Thousands attempt to cross daily, many include families with young children and authorities warn that crossing the river can be challenging even for strong swimmers.
Data from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol noted that from October 2021 to July 2022, it had recovered over 200 bodies in the Del Rio Sector along the Rio Grande.
