International News: Mexico authorizes U.S. seizure of drug lord Caro Quintero’s assets in Mexico

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A Mexican court has authorized U.S. authorities to seize the assets of drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero in Mexico, Reuters reports.

This is the first use of a new asset forfeiture law that could strengthen cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico in their fight against drug cartels.

In 1985, Quintero who is the co-founder of the Guadalajara Cartel was convicted of murdering a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent.

Caro Quintero has avoided extradition but under the civil forfeiture law, Mexico will allow the U.S. Justice Department to divest Quintero of property in Guadalajara.

U.S. officials say that Caro Quintero purchased real estate with earnings from decades of trafficking of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine to the United States.
