World Health Organization: Almost half of the world population suffers from oral diseases

Posted: Saturday, November 19, 2022. 10:12 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that about 3.5 billion people, almost half of the world’s population suffer from oral diseases.

According to the WHO, most common oral illnesses are tooth decay, severe gum disease, tooth loss and oral cancers.

Every year, some 380,000 new cases of oral cancers are diagnosed.

WHO noted that the unavailability of highly specialized dental equipment in primary healthcare facilities is a major factor.

“Oral health has long been neglected in global health, but many oral diseases can be prevented,” said WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

WHO advised world leaders to include equitable oral health services as part of their national planning and integrate oral health services into their primary health care models.
