By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Poland defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 to take the lead in Group C in the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the Education City Stadium in Doha in front of 44,259 fans.

Though Saudi Arabia played better, Poland only needed two good breaks to run away with the win plus their goalkeeper stopped a penalty kick and the following rebound.

Poland took the lead in the 39th minute when Piotr Zielinski netted the ball off an assist from Robert Lewandowski. The goal was Lewandowski’s first World Cup goal in five games.

Saudi Arabia could have leveled the game, but Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny stopped Salem Al Dawsari’s penalty kick and the subsequent rebound in the first minute (45’+1’) of injury time at the end of the first half.

The European side put the game away when Lewandowski himself scored in the 82nd minute after stripping Abdulellah Al-Malki just outside the penalty area.

Poland now leads the group with four points followed by Saudi Arabia with three. Mexico and Argentina, who have one point each, play today at 1:00 pm at the Lusail Stadium in Al Daayen.

Before that France takes on Denmark at 10:00 am at the 974 Stadium in Doha.
