2022 FIFA World Cup: Gonçalo Ramos replaces Cristiano Ronaldo, scores hat trick leading Portugal in 6-1 blowout of Switzerland

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Twenty-one-year-old Gonçalo Ramos replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal lineup and couldn’t have had a better game scoring a sensational hattrick to lead his team to a 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland.

83,720 fans watched the Portuguese show at the Lusail Stadium in Al Daayen.

Coach Fernando Santos made a bold move in benching Cristiano who had complained after he was substituted in the last game, and his choice of Ramos over the other forwards with more experience, paid off big time. The match was expected to be the most even of Round of 16 but today the Switzerland defense had as many holes as Swiss cheese and the Portuguese ate it up.

Ramos scored in the 17^th, 51^st, and 67^th. Other than that, 39-year-old Pepe scored a header in the 33^rd, Raphael Guerrero converted in the 55^th and Rafael Leao put the icing on the cake in the 90’+2’.

Manuel Akanji scored the consolation goal for Switzerland in the 58^th.

Cristiano Ronaldo was inserted into the game in the 74^th minute for Joao Felix.

Portugal will face Morocco, who put out Spain in a penalty kick shootout, at 9:00 am on Saturday, December 10, at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.
