By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Argentina face Croatia on Tuesday at 1:00 pm in the first Semifinal at the Lusail Stadium in Al Daayen for a ticket to the big dance.
Argentina advanced by defeating the Netherlands on penalty kicks while Croatia got through by eliminating tournament favourites Brazil in the same manner.
Argentina are undefeated in their six World Cup Semifinals while Croatia have won one and lost two.
Argentina were runners up to Germany in Brazil 2018 while Croatia fell to France in the 2018 Final. Both are aiming to win the world competition this time, but only one will go through.
Croatia and Argentina have met five times with each team winning two games and drawing once. At the World Cups, they are even with one win each. In Russia 2018, Croatia defeated Argentina 3-0 in the Group Stage. Begore that, in the 1998 World Cup, Argentina won 1-0 in the first round as well.
Both are led by iconic players. Lionel Messi lead Argentina and Luka Mudric is at the Croatian helm. It’s safe to say they know each other very well from their great rivalry at Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Though Messi could become Argentina’s sole topscorer at the World Cup, after having leveled with previous leader Gabriel Batistuta at 10 goals each, he is more focused on winning the World Cup, the only trophy missing from his illustrious career, than gaining personal records. You could say the same is true for Modric. His goal is the World Cup.
Expect a great game today at 1:00 pm.
The second Semifinal between Morocco and holders France is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor on Wednesday.
