International News: Record number of guns confiscated at U.S. airports in 2022

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Officials in the United States say that a record number of firearms were confiscated from passengers at U.S. airports in 2022, BBC reports.

As of mid-December, a total of 6,301 guns were taken at checkpoints and 88% of those were still loaded.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said it expects to confiscate 6,600 guns by year’s end – a 10% increase over last year’s record level.

In addition, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, had the highest number of recorded firearm stops.

Officials say no reason was given for why more people were trying to go through security with guns.

Even if a passenger has a weapon permit, guns are not allowed in the passenger cabin or on an airplane.

Passengers can only travel with firearms in a checked bag when they are unloaded and locked in a hard-sided case.

Passengers must also inform airline representatives that they intend to travel with the weapon during check-in.
