By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat said, at the handing over of a home for a resident of the Belize City Pickstock Division in the rural Belize District, that 50 houses will be inaugurated in Burrell Boom area in January.

“In January, we will be inaugurating 50 homes in the Boom area and the Pickstock Division have allocation for five more of their really needy residents,” Minister Espat said.

Espat explained that it’s difficult to build homes in Belize City due to the unavailability of land, adding that Belize City residents are getting houses built in the rural area.

To that end, Minister Espat asked his colleagues to identify land for community projects.

“We are asking the area reps in each constituency to try to find 10, 15, 20 acres of land somewhere where we can more efficiently build homes in a concentrated area,” Minister Espat said.

“The costs will go down and we in return will put it in the infrastructure necessary for those projects to be successful.

“What do I mean by infrastructure? Roadways, drains, access to telephone, water, electricity. There are so many things that come with it. And if it’s a community by itself, we have to look at putting in schools, providing transportation. We have to make these projects successful,” Minister Espat said.

The Minister explained that in several instances the MIDH has had to build access roads and installed the necessary infrastructure to some of the houses they have constructed in the rural areas. These he said are more expensive than the houses but said that they would have had to build the roads eventually anyway. He added that now that roads are being built, people who have been waiting for the infrastructure to be in place, can now build their homes.
