By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the European Commission noted that most European Union (EU) countries support implementing pre-departure COVID-19 testing for travelers from China, Reuters report.

China plans to lift travel restrictions even as the country experiences a surge in infections.

The EU health security committee met today and a commission spokesperson said that, “The overwhelming majority of countries are in favor of pre-departure testing.”

“These measures would need to be targeted at the most appropriate flights and airports and carried out in a coordinated way to ensure their effectiveness,” he said.

In addition, the commission is discussing recommendations of mask-wearing on flights from China, wastewater monitoring for aircraft arriving from China, genomic surveillance at airports and increased monitoring and sequencing and increased EU vigilance on testing and vaccination.

According to the spokesperson, all EU countries agreed they needed a coordinated approach to the changing situation in China and to deal with the implications of increased travel from China to Europe after China lifts its policies on January 8, 2023.
