International News: World Health Organization says data from China underrepresents COVID-19 surge

Posted: Wednesday, January 4, 2023. 11:14 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: An official from the World Health Organization (WHO) said that the data being presented by China does not represent the real COVID-19 situation, Reuters report.

The WHO is scheduled to meet again with Chinese scientists as part of a wider briefing among member states on the global COVID-19 situation.

“We believe that the current numbers being published from China underrepresent the true impact of the disease in terms of hospital admissions, in terms of ICU admissions, particularly in terms of death,” Mike Ryan, WHO’s emergencies director stated.

Ryan confirmed that there is still no “complete data”.

Last month, China said that it was classifying deaths as COVID-related by counting only those involving COVID-caused pneumonia or respiratory failure.

Since the change in COVID-19 policies, the country has reported 5 or fewer deaths per day.

And WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the agency is “concerned” about the surge in COVID-19 infections in China.

In addition, the WHO urged Beijing to provide rapid and regular data on hospitalization and death there as well as real-time viral sequencing.

“WHO is concerned about the risk to life in China and has reiterated the importance of vaccination, including booster doses to protect against hospitalization, severe disease and death,” Ghebreyesus said.
