Fifty-nine-year-old man charged with sexually assaulting 9-year-old girl granted bail; still remanded to prison

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Fifty-nine-year-old Leo smith, who was accused of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl was granted bail this week, but still ended up going back to prison.

Smith appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after spending a month and three days on remand at the Belize Central Prison. In court, Magistrate Khiana Gordon granted Smith bail in the sum of $4,000 plus two sureties of $2,000 each; however, Smith was unable to post bail and was further remanded until he is able to do so.

He is due back in court on February 10.

Smith was arrested and charged for sexual assault in December 2022 for inappropriately touching the minor. He was denied bail in the first instance.
