By Rubén Morales Iglesias: FIFA have filed three disciplinary charges against World Cup champions Argentina for their conduct, or misconduct, during the celebrations that followed the Final in which they beat France in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar.

FIFA said in their World Cup disciplinary update that Argentina made three potential breaches of its disciplinary code: offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play under article 11, misconduct of players and officials under article 12, and breaching of marketing regulations under article 44. FIFA will now investigate the charges but following due process Argentina will be able to respond.

FIFA didn’t identify which players or members of Argentina’s coaching staff are being charged with committing offences that they have not yet named.

But it’s more than likely that the celebration by Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez making a lewd gesture with the best goalkeeper’s Golden Glove trophy while still on the awards ceremony stage is one of the actions why Argentina is being brought up to task. Then, in the dressing room he was filmed mocking France forward Kylian Mbappé.

After the on-pitch celebrations, the Argentine team ran past the interview zone singing and breaking some ‘flimsy partition walls’ and didn’t stop to talk to the media as is required.

FIFA will also investigate Croatia for potential breaches relating to “Discrimination” and “Order and security” during their match against Morocco.

For their part, Serbia have been fined 50,000 Swiss franc (over BZ$118,000). They have also been punished with a partial stadium closure – 25% of seats closed – for their next Men’s “A” National Team international match for “chants by Serbian supporters and team misconduct” during their 3-2 defeat by Switzerland in a Group G match at the World Cup. The chants were directed at Swiss players who have ethnic Albanian ties with Kosovo. They were also charged for team misconduct by seven players who were shown yellow cards during that same match.

Mexico and Ecuador have also been sanctioned for chants by supporters at the World Cup. Mexico have been fined 100,000 Swiss franc (over BZ $215,000) and must play a home match in a FIFA competition behind closed doors for anti-gay chants in their games against Poland and Saudi Arabia. Many Mexicans contend the chants are cultural and are not anti-gay.

Meanwhile, Ecuador have been fined 20,000 Swiss franc (over BZ $43,000) and face a partial closure of their stadium in their next international match. The stands behind the goals will be closed. The Ecuadorian chants during the opening game against Qatar were reportedly directed at Chile that filed charges to have Ecuador disqualified because they had lined up Byron Castillo, who they claim was born in Colombia, during the qualifiers.
