International News: Iran executes British-Iranian accused of spying

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A British-Iranian national who had served as Iran’s deputy defence minister has been executed, Reuters report.

London and Washington had called for Alireza Akbari’s release after he was given the death sentence on charges of spying for Britain.

Britain also said that the case was politically motivated and condemned the execution.

Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called it “a callous and cowardly act carried out by a barbaric regime”.

Iran’s judiciary reported the execution but didn’t say when it took place.

The execution could further worsen Iran’s turbulent relations with the West.

France and the United States joined in condemning the execution.
