Ministry of Education’s Consultations continue on new Competency-based Curriculum

Posted: Wednesday, January 18, 2023. 8:59 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST) continues consultations on the new national competency-based curriculum.

On January 12 and 13, 2023, a delegation of education stakeholders, led by Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of State in the Ministry visited primary school teachers and principals of the Corozal District to continue consultations.

The teachers and principals expressed their concerns and ideas on the pilot implementation of the new curriculum during this transition year, in preparation for full implementation in the 2023-24 academic year.

Educators were introduced to the work of the newly established pro-tempore Teacher Support Team, made up of exemplary teachers whose main responsibilities will be to assist with clarifying questions and responding to concerns in a timely manner.

The MoECST’s virtual platform will also be used to create a Community of Practice for teachers, principals, and the Support Team to discuss and share ideas on the implementation and improvement of the competency-based curriculum.

The Ministry noted that the delegation will continue its countrywide tour and a similar effort will commence in March of this year for high schools.

The Ministry says that the new competency-based curriculum addresses the need to develop skills and attitudes, in addition to knowledge, in children to prepare them for a successful life of contribution to the sustainable human development of Belize.

The delegation of education stakeholders that accompanied Zabaneh included Senator Elena Smith, President of the Belize National Teachers’ Union; Reverend Alvaro Pott, Representative of the Managing Authorities; Consuelo Godfrey, Pathlight Belize Education Specialist; Michelle Turton and Alejandro Perez from the MoECST’s Curriculum and Assessment Unit; Emmanuel Yam and other officers from the Corozal District Education Centre; and Miriam Paz, Head of the Teacher Support Team.
