By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI) noted that weather condition plays an important role in the outbreak of an insect pest.
SIRDI noted that it has been monitoring the froghopper pest in different agroecological zones within the northern sugar belt and the different micro-climate data collected indicated the need to adopt an Integrated Froghopper Management.
Today, SIRDI hosted a Froghopper Field Day in San Lazaro, Orange Walk District.
The session covered the areas of sugarcane residue management to reduce the second burning and as a result, decrease the emission of carbon dioxide.
Twenty-seven participants had the opportunity to see the practical execution of the different activities such as Pass of the Phytosanitary harrow and the application of Effective Microorganisms (E.M).
These are preventative measures for reducing the froghopper pest incidence in sugarcane, SIRDI noted.
