Pakistani Guantanamo prisoner freed to Belize asks God for forgiveness; pledges to be a productive member of society

Posted: Thursday, February 2, 2023. 6:45 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Eamon Courtenay informed Belizeans during a press conference that the Government of Belize and the U.S. have reached a deal to re-settle a former Guantanamo Bay inmate, Majid Khan, who was held under suspicion as a terrorist in Guantanamo Bay.

Khan, 42, admitted in 2012 to conspiring with members of the Al Qaeda Islamist militant organization responsible for the 2001 attacks to commit murder as well as providing material support for terrorism and spying and had been serving as a government witness since.

In a statement issued through his legal team, Khan said that he continued to ask for God’s forgiveness.

“I deeply regret the things that I did many years ago, and I have taken responsibility and tried to make up for them. I continue to ask for forgiveness from God and those I have hurt. I am truly sorry,” Khan said.

In addition, Khan says that he intends to make the most of this second chance in life.

“I intend to make the most of it. I deeply regret the things that I did many years ago, and I have taken responsibility and tried to make up for them. I promise all of you, especially the people of Belize that I will be a productive, law-abiding member of society,” Khan stated.

“Thank you for believing in me, and I will not let you down. My actions will speak louder than my words,” Khan added.

Minister Courtenay stated that Khan’s resettlement in Belize will be at the cost of the US government and while he will not be allowed to travel internationally, he will be free to move within the country.
