Fisherman remanded to jail for allegedly stealing TV from his grandmother and threatening to kill his grandfather

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Karch Matt Burns, 34, of a Baghdad Street address in Belize City is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after he was denied bail on Tuesday. He is accused of stealing a TV from his grandmother and threatening to kill his grandfather.

Burns appeared unrepresented in court and was read two criminal charges before Senior Magistrate, Aretha Ford in Court #2 for theft and using threatening words.

Burns is accused of stealing a black JVC television valued at $1,000 which belongs to his grandmother. The incident allegedly occurred on January 28.

Burns was additionally charged with using threatening words to his grandfather, who reported that on January 17, 2023, Burns uttered the following words to him, “Ah wah kill yuh.”

In court, Burns appeared to be upset and made several outbursts. He was cautioned about his behaviour in court.

According to Burns, his grandmother gave him the money to buy the TV and he claims it was he who went to Chetumal and bought the TV so when his grandmother would not give him any money, he pawned out the TV.

But Prosecutor Sergeant Christopher Smith had heavy objection to bail being granted to Burns on several grounds, one being, that the two incidents involved relatives of Burns and that the two incidents occurred on two separate dates and are being dealt with separately in two different courtrooms.

At the end of his arraignment, Burns was denied bail and remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until February 9.
