By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man who stole close to $40,000 from his own mother while she was out of the country was spared prison time and instead given a fine in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this week.

Twenty-five-year-old Jose Pineda appeared unrepresented in court for his sentencing hearing, after pleading guilty to a charge of theft on January 30, with respect to a total of $38,500 in Belize and US currency that was stolen from his mother’s bedroom while she was in Guatemala.

The Magistrate told Pineda that since he had no criminal record and saved the court time by pleading guilty he would be fined $2,500 plus $5 cost of court which he must pay by October 31 or he will face a year in prison.

The Magistrate also told Pineda that the aggravating factors against him included the amount stolen and the fact that he did not return the money after he was caught.

Pineda’s parents had appeared in court previously attempting to drop the charges; however, the prosecution still pursued the matter.
