International News: 20,000 people killed in Turkey-Syria following devastating earthquake

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Authorities in Turkey and Syria have confirmed that more than 20,000 people died following Monday’s devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

Turkey’s disaster and emergency management authority says the death toll in the country is now 17,134.

In Syria, at least 3,162 people are known to have died, BBC reports.

On Tuesday, President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan declared a state of emergency in 10 provinces.

Thousands of buildings were destroyed including hospitals and schools.

Videos and photos of the scenes show the devastation and destruction.

The quake is believed to be the strongest to hit Turkey since 1939.
