Statistical Institute of Belize: Prices of basic food items have soared by 17.9% in 2023

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) indicate that the price for food had an inflation rate of 17.9 percent.

“Considerably higher prices being seen across almost all basic food items,” the SIB noted.

The price of pound of rice went from $1.47 in January 2022 to $1.70 in January 2023, an increase of 15.4%.

The price of flour also soared from $1.10 in January 2022 to $1.51 in January 2023, a 36.8% increase.

In addition, the price of Litre of vegetable oil saw a 38% increase from $4.57 to $6.31.

Cereal products were 19.4 percent more costly than in January of last year, driven by increases in prices for rice, flour, bread, and tortillas.

Consumers continue to share prices on social media for basic food items at their respective grocery shops.
