By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The most recent monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) survey conducted by the Statistical Institute of Belize showed that in January 2023, the cost of transportation increased by 9.3%.

The SIB noted that the costs rose primarily due to higher prices for fuels, with both diesel and premium gasoline up considerably compared to January 2022.

Therefore, prices for passenger transport services were 14.6 percent higher than they were in January of 2022, reflecting higher bus, taxi, sea, and airfares, while prices for new motor vehicles were up by 5.2 percent.

The prices for fuel also remained higher than they were in January 2022 with diesel registering an increase of $2.54, with the average price per gallon rising from $10.71 in January of last year to $13.26 in January, 2023.
