Major crimes are up slightly for January; burglaries of concern

By Aaron Humes: According to the Belize Crime Observatory, the number of reported major crimes in the month of January – murder, robbery, burglary, theft, rape, and unlawful sexual intercourse – was up slightly with 70 reports compared to 67 last year.

These consisted of 41 burglaries; ten robberies and thefts each; four murders; three rapes and two incidents of unlawful sexual intercourse. The major increases were in burglary and theft, with murders down eight compared to last year’s figure of 12 for the month of January. Shooting incidents decreased from 20 to 11. (Burglary is not distinguished between official buildings and homes, cars, or other property.)

In the burglary category, there were 11 reported in the Belize District and nine in Corozal, with none of the other districts reporting less than three.

Arrests for major crime incidents rose from 18 to 26, including three for murder and 16 for burglary.

In the area of drugs, police recovered substantial amounts of processed cannabis (marijuana), crack cocaine, and regular cocaine as well as ten crack pipes.

Nineteen firearms were seized as well as 310 rounds of various live ammunition, while three firearms were reported stolen of which one has been recovered.
