By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Mahogany Heights man was fined over $100 in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for having a few grams of marijuana over the decriminalized limit.
Twenty-five-year-old Kyron Armstrong appeared before Acting Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts Anderson on Friday, charged with a single count of possession of controlled drugs, with respect to 14.4 grams of marijuana found on him during a police search.
Armstrong pleaded guilty to the offense and since he was a first offender, was fined $100, plus $5 cost of court which he must pay by April 21 or spend a month in prison.
Police conducting patrols in Mahogany Heights stopped and searched him on Sunday, March 12, and found the marijuana in a plastic bag in his pants pocket.
In October 2017, the House of Representatives passed the amendment to the Misuse of Drugs Act making it legal for a person to be in possession of no more than 10 grams of marijuana for personal use.
