By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: According to Reuters, a source confirmed that Honduras demanded $2.5 billion in aid from Taiwan just a day before Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced that her government would seek to open relations with China.
Honduras is 1 of 14 countries that has formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
Since Beijing continues to court and win over Taiwan’s remaining allies.
Reports indicated that Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina had written to Taiwan’s foreign ministry demanding the money.
However, before Taiwan could respond, the Honduran President made the announcement of the switch via Twitter.
Since the news broke this week, several allies including Belize have reiterated their support for Taiwan.
