International News: China conducts military drills around Taiwan, heightening tensions in the region

Posted: Monday, April 10, 2023. 9:09 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: According to a recent report from the BBC, China has conducted a series of military drills around Taiwan, including a “sealing off” of the island and simulated targeted strikes. The exercises, which began on Saturday, come amidst increased tensions between Taiwan and China, with the latter viewing Taiwan as its territory and vowing to “reunify” the self-governing democratic island.

The drills occurred just days after Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-Wen, met with US House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, in California, which may have further angered China. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reported that it detected 12 Chinese warships and 91 aircraft around the island on Monday, and it has vowed to continue strengthening its combat preparedness.

Despite the conclusion of the military exercises, the Chinese military confirmed that fighter planes loaded with live ammunition had “carried out multiple waves of simulated strikes on important targets”. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry has stated that it will never relax its efforts to strengthen its combat readiness in response to China’s actions.

The tension between China and Taiwan continues to be a significant issue in the region, and it remains to be seen how this latest round of military drills will impact the relationship between the two nations.
