International News: Peru former Minister complicit in journalist’s murder 

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A court in Peru has concluded that a former Minister was complicit in the 1988 murder of journalist, Hugo Bustios.

Bustios was a journalist who investigated human rights abuses.

Former minister, Daniel Urresti was sentenced to 12 years in jail.

According to the BBC, at the time, Urresti was an officer in the army and participated in the ambush and murder of Bustíos.

Bustios was murdered amidst the conflict between Peruvian security forces and rebels of the Maoist Shining Path group.

He reported on human rights abuses committed both by the rebels and the army in the Andean region where the armed conflict left 69,000 people dead or disappeared.

The court noted that 6 members of the military had been involved in the journalist’s killing and that Daniel Urresti was one of them.
