By Aaron Humes: This evening, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has announced that the power will be interrupted for eight hours in Belize City and along the major highways within the boundaries of the Old Capital on Sunday, May 7 – from seven in the morning to three in the afternoon.

The power company says it will be conducting power system upgrades and maintenance at its major installations as well as connecting a new one. The upgrades are intended to “improve the reliability of the power supply and meet the growing energy demands of customers in Belize City.”

The works include the interconnection of a temporary substation near Lake Independence Boulevard, intended to be a backup to the main substation on Magazine Road which, BEL announces, will be taken out of service for major extended upgrades; maintenance and system upgrades to the West Lake Substation at Mile 8, George Price Highway; maintenance and system upgrades to the transmission and distribution system within the City, and maintenance and upgrades to the Magazine Road substation serving the City.

BEL apologizes for the inconvenience to be caused but states, “These upgrades and system improvements are a part of our action plan to make our electricity service to our Customers even more reliable and more sustainable and to support the rapidly increasing demand for electricity throughout the country.”
