By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele announced that the country has gone 365 days without any murders.
The Associated French Press reports that Bukele’s office explained that 365 was the total number of days without numbers since 2019 rather than consecutive days.
In March 2022, Bukele began a crackdown on violent gangs and has since detained over 68,000 suspected gang members.
“We ended May 10, 2023 with zero murders at a national level. With that, it has been 365 (days) without a murder, an entire year,” Bukele stated.
“El Salvador has gone from being the most violent country in the world to the most secure in Latin America,” the Salvadoran Press secretary said.
However, human rights groups say there is a “lack of complete information” about the figures.
In addition, human rights groups continue to call on the Salvadoran Government to respect the constitutional rights of those being detained.
