Mirza Morales murder: Could link to previous murders lead to solving hers?

By Aaron Humes: While no formal motive has been established, police are reasonably sure that 31-year-old Mirza Morales knew her killers – and why they wanted her dead.

That is because the killer strolled into the kitchen of La Canosa Restaurant and Bar in El Progreso (Seven Miles), Cayo District along the Mountain Pine Ridge-Caracol Road on Saturday night and shot her while she was doing dishes – no questions asked, no one else threatened, nothing robbed.

It has been reported that the property was burglarized about two weeks earlier and that according to eyewitnesses, further shots were fired into the air before the killer got aboard the get-away motorcycle and sped off toward Georgeville.

As noted by Police Commissioner Chester Williams, Morales was the former girlfriend of the late Mario Graniel, who was killed along with an innocent bystander, American cardiologist Dr Gary Swank of Roanoke, Virginia, who was on vacation and doing some fly-fishing northwest of Ambergris Caye in June of 2019: “When the murder of Dr Swank and Graniel took place in San Pedro, the name of the now-deceased was prevalent in that investigation, I am not going to go into details in terms of how that came about but the public would know that she may have been in a relationship with Graniel at that particular time and now that she is a deceased person and the victim of murder we believe that the same persons who were behind Graniel’s murder and Dr Swank are the ones who are responsible for her murder.”

Morales and her children tried to leave that horror behind, resettling in a quiet corner of the Cayo District. She was heard to admit that she had some money and so did not personally have to work – but she wanted her teenage daughter to learn the value of hard work.

Unfortunately, it seems she could not escape her past. A former boyfriend whose name was also called in the double murder investigation is being sought in connection with this one, as well as others from the San Pedro area.

The Commissioner said that there was a “perception” of a drug trafficking element in the case, but that is not something police can confirm at this point.

An intensive police investigation continues.
