By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Department of the Environment (DOE) and the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 by handing over four lift trailers in Santa Familia to four villages in the lower Cayo District. The trailers are part of a pilot project, ‘Project Fresh Start’, that aims to improve solid waste management and reduce plastic pollution in these communities.

World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental outreach, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually since 1974. This year’s theme was ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.

The DOE and the Sustainable Development Ministry joined the campaign by strengthening the capacity and capability of the village councils of Santa Familia, Billy White, Duck Run I, and Duck Run III to tackle plastic pollution and improve household garbage collection systems. The project also seeks to address the underlying causes of illegal dumping and burning of garbage in these villages and encourage civic pride among residents.

The Ministry of Sustainable Development said other activities for World Environment Day included a ‘Bag and Save Day’ on June 5, during which several businesses offered discounts between 5% and 10% when shopping with a reusable bag.

The Department of the Environment also held a video competition to demonstrate how to tackle plastic pollution within a home or in a community. The winners will be announced on June 9, 2023.

“A cleaner environment promotes healthier lives for all,” the Department of the Environment said.

“Let us all join efforts to “Beat Plastic Pollution” and contribute to our national efforts in transitioning to a circular economy.
