By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today is being celebrated as World Oceans Day 2023!

World Oceans Day is being celebrated under the theme, “Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing”.

Oceans are the lungs of our planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere.

World Oceans Day is set aside to bring awareness of the impacts of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.

The United Nations noted that the ocean covers over 70% of earth and produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen.

The ocean is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world.

An estimated 40 million people are being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

The U.N. urges decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activists to put the ocean first.
