Belize fans join global celebration as Tupac Shakur shines posthumously on Hollywood Walk of Fame

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The legendary West Coast rapper, Tupac Shakur, was posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday, June 7, marking the 2,758th star on the famous boulevard. The ceremony, hosted by radio personality Big Boy, featured speeches from several influential figures in Tupac’s life and career, reflecting on his significant impact and enduring legacy, according to Billboard.com.

Speakers included Allen Hughes, director of “Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur”, Shakur’s sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, Matt Fritch, chairman of the board of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and writer and former Black Panther Party member Jamal Joseph. Special guests included Mike Epps, YG, Tupac’s stepbrother Mopreme Shakur, Money-B, among others.

Joseph, reflecting on Shakur’s worldwide influence, stated, “When we talk about that global influence, we think of Tupac Amaru Shakur. But for everybody who knew Tupac, everybody who was here, we knew he was a star from the time he was a little boy.”

This prestigious accolade comes almost three decades after Shakur’s tragic death and reflects the indelible mark he left on the world of music. His influence extended far beyond the United States, with fans from every corner of the globe, including Belize, where the local population shares a profound love for the late rapper.

In the decade following Shakur’s unanimous selection for the honor in 2013 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, his fans eagerly anticipated the commemoration. Notably, this occasion coincides with the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, a genre Shakur profoundly influenced.

“How fitting in the year of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary that the art form’s most transcendent star is finally being placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?” Hughes asked the crowd during his speech.

Shakur’s legacy extends beyond music, having been recognized with an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, and the opening of an “All Eyez on Me” exhibit in the Grammy Museum in 2015. In 2022, the Canvas @ L.A. Live honored him with a “Wake Me When I’m Free” immersive experience.

“Today, we aren’t just honoring a star on the sidewalk; we are honoring the very essence of a person who fearlessly pursued his dreams and fought to turn them into reality,” said Sekyiwa Shakur during her emotional speech. She added, “And today, the unveiling of Tupac’s star not only pays tribute to his contributions to the entertainment industry but also speaks volumes about his lasting impact, even after 25 years. I couldn’t be prouder of my brother to watch his star now shine even brighter.”

The star on Hollywood’s famous boulevard serves as a tangible testament to Shakur’s enduring influence, his contribution to the music industry, and his ongoing legacy – as he continues to inspire artists and fans worldwide, including the passionate Belizean fanbase.
