Belizean students win silver and bronze in Bocce at Special Olympics

By Celeste Chang: A group of students from Stella Maris School represented Belize at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin Germany, winning silver and bronze medals.

The students, Barrington, Tiwannie, Anneliese and Khadine are representing Belize in the sport of Bocce. They are attending the event along with their coach Mr. Lino and their chairlady Ms. Maxine McKay. 

The Team did well, placing 6th Overall and competed against much older and more experienced competitors while still managing to receive silver medals for the male team and both silver and bronze for the female team.

The Special Olympics World Game Berlin 2023 had more than 200 host towns and more that 200 communal projects that were  selected to welcome delegations from all over the world. This was the largest communal inclusion project in Germany’s history. It is believed that it will create a strong community while opening up spaces for encounters far beyond the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023.

The Special Olympics is a global organization that helps athletes with special needs.  The organization was established in 1968.
