By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a significant move strengthening ties between Beijing and Central American nations, China and Honduras have commenced talks to form a free trade agreement. Honduran Economy Minister hailed the event as a “historic day” in a tweet.
The discussions were initiated by the Secretary of State in the Office of Economic Development of Honduras, Abg. Fredis Cerrato, and the Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Wentao. The Honduran Foreign Minister, Eduardo Reina, also announced that China’s Deputy Trade Minister would visit Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, from July 6-8 to further these trade talks.
The diplomatic relations between China and Honduras were officially formed in March of this year, shortly after Honduras cut bilateral ties with Taiwan, a move Beijing considers a prerequisite for establishing friendly relations with other nations.
Chinese President Xi Jinping warmly welcomed Honduran President Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento to Beijing for their inaugural bilateral meeting last month. This meeting led to the signing of approximately 17 cross-industry cooperation documents encompassing areas such as the Belt and Road construction, economy, trade, quality inspection, agriculture, science and technology, culture, and education.
Additionally, the agreements included China’s consent for the import of Honduran commodities, notably bananas, coffee, and shrimp, further bolstering the economic ties between the two nations.
