Protecting young Belizeans online: Parents cautioned against excessive social media posts

Posted: Wednesday, August 23, 2023. 10:23 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a digital era where every moment is potentially shareable, parents are being warned about the implications of oversharing images of their children on social platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Reflect for a moment on the impact of having countless photos from your childhood freely available for anyone to access and potentially misuse. For many, it could evoke feelings of invasion and violation, a longing to reclaim and privatize those moments.

One voice leading this call for discretion is a TikTok user known as @mom.uncharted. Through her content, she emphasizes the potential harms and consequences of posting children’s images and stories on the internet, often posing the question of exploitation for likes and clicks. Recently, she shared five essential questions every parent should contemplate before uploading the content of their children. These queries range from whether a parent would show the content to a stranger on the street to the more grave concerns about child predators using the images inappropriately or using the information to approach a child.

The message she delivers is clear: “Not everything that happens privately needs to be shared publicly.” She further asks parents to consider the feelings and potential humiliation their children might experience upon discovering their images online or if their peers use those pictures as ammunition for bullying. A poignant testimony shared in the comments section underscored this concern. A mother detailed the distressing experience her son faced after classmates found and mocked him using his photos from her Facebook.

While this trend of oversharing children’s photos is global, it’s essential to spotlight its relevance to Belize. Belizean mothers, just like mothers worldwide, take pride in their children’s milestones and want to share these moments with a larger community. However, the consequences of doing so without caution can be severe.

As Belizeans, we have a tightly-knit community where everyone tends to know everyone else. This might give a false sense of security. But the internet is boundless, and once a photo is uploaded, controlling its spread becomes nearly impossible. The potential misuse of these images, ranging from embarrassment to more sinister intents, is a risk that must be recognized.

Belizean moms are thus urged to think critically about the digital footprint they’re creating for their children. Protecting their privacy and safety today can save them from unforeseen troubles tomorrow.
