Mexican national detained over a week charged with Immigration offense; one of seven claimed to be linked to Mexican cartel gang

By Aaron Humes: Mexican national Javier Montano Martinez remains in the custody of the Immigration Department, pending more charges after pleading guilty on Monday to a charge of failure to present himself on arrival in Belize to an Immigration officer.

Montano has been in the hands of authorities since August 20, after allegations surfaced that he and six others came to Belize allegedly to carry out a hit for the Mexican Caborca Cartel in Corozal.

While those allegations were never fully substantiated, the other six persons have been let go without any charge and only Montano remains.

While Montano has retained defense counsel Bryan Neal, he was brought to court around 12 noon Monday without Neal’s knowledge. By the time Neal made it to Coney Drive, he said, his client had already decided to plead guilty. He was fined $1,000 and cost of court due immediately, which was done.

But Attorney Neal says the Department took his client back into custody, now claiming they have more charges to levy against him.

Montano claims to be a contractor and has a valid work permit to be in Belize, but the court agreed with the Department that whenever it is through with him, he would be expelled.
