Two men remanded to jail for allegedly raping 15-year-old girl at George Street apartment

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two men accused of allegedly raping a 15 year old girl were denied bail in court today and remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

Devaney Rudolph Flowers, 42; and Kareem Rashon Bennett, 43; were arraigned in court today on a charge of rape each. Bennett was additionally charged with wounding a police officer and resisting arrest during his detention.

Bennett’s attorney, Ian Gray, requested bail for his client while the prosecution objected. The Magistrate then decided against granting bail to the accused in the first instance.

On September 11, a concerned citizen reported to police that a minor was with two men seemingly against her will inside an apartment on George Street. When police arrived at the apartment, they heard moaning and were denied entry into the building but eventually got in and found the minor in a black shirt with no underwear and in a semi-conscious state. Flowers and Bennett were then taken into custody.

The teen was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and later told police she was at a party on September 10 with her step-sister, who left without notifying her. She reported that she was walking toward the terminal to catch a bus to go home when she stopped at a shop at the corner of Euphrates Avenue and King Street to buy a drink.

There she a met a man she didn’t know. She reported she wanted to use the restroom and the man offered to let her use his so she accompanied him to the apartment building on George Street. She went into the restroom, leaving her drink unattended then came out and finished her drink. When she attempted to leave she was stopped by one of the men. She says the last thing she remembers is finishing her drink and blacking out until the police arrived. A medical examination confirmed that she was carnally known.
