Hungry man who stole cheese and ham from Brodies let off with fine, but still sent to jail for previous outstanding fine

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 55-year-old man caught stealing cheese and ham from Brodies in Belize City claims he did so because he was hungry and he was let off with a fine, but an old charge for theft came back to haunt him and landed him in jail anyway.

Calvin Meighan appeared in court unrepresented today and pleaded guilty to a single charge of theft. He wasted no time in pleading guilty and was fined $500 plus $5 cost of court and was given until December 29 to pay, in default 5 months in jail.

According to police, Meighan was caught by a security guard leaving Brodies with two Kraft mozzarella cheese and a McKezie salami ham with a total value of $68.40. Meighan claims he resorted to stealing the food items because he was hungry.

Meighan would have been free to go, but was ordered to pay $300 toward a fine he had racked up for a previous crime of a similar nature. He could not pay and was instead remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he can do so.
