ComPol maintains no foul play suspected by Police in Osvaldo Martinez death

By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told reporters in Belize City this evening that police do not presently suspect foul play following the discovery of the body of Osvaldo Martinez of Orange Walk Town earlier this morning.

The body was found in the New River not far from where he was last seen by family members on Saturday evening, with at least one limb missing, suggesting the body had been interfered with by a crocodile or other animal.

However, the Commissioner said a post-mortem examination is necessary to establish cause of death and any criminal nexus.

Police took statements from and questioned Martinez’s wife and other family members for “a proper account” of what happened leading up to Martinez’s disappearance, but they were not and are not formally detained.

Investigations continue.
