By Aaron Humes: Following a magnitude 5.6 earthquake this morning, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has reported that initial assessments have found damage to apparently be minor, the Jamaica Observer reports.

However, the country’s earthquake protocols have been activated and Jamaicans should stay calm, he said: “It is likely that after the initial shock, there are usually aftershocks so you want to be in a safe place. That safe place may be outside until you have conducted an assessment of the building and you have determined that it is safe to reenter the building.”

The Prime Minister further urged his countrymen to follow all protocols regarding earthquakes and general safety.

The epicenter of the temblor was 2.5 miles west-northwest of Hope Bay, Portland, but was felt across the island. There have been a number of reports across the island of minor damage to buildings. No deaths have been reported.
