Police officers now undergoing mandatory training hours, says Commissioner

By Aaron Humes: While not strictly a part of their remit, police officers have been called on to assist with transporting individuals to hospital, at the scenes of accidents and other mishaps, and on a couple of recent memorable occasions, delivering babies.

To help officers be better prepared for such happenings, the Belize Police Department has established a formal training schedule and protocol according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, who said earlier this week that such practice is mandatory for every police officer: “We do [several] trainings. As a matter of fact, under our new policy, every police officer must undergo forty hours of training per year. Failure to complete the forty hours of training as required by our policy [will mean that] you will be denied your annual increment. And so, training is always ongoing and we now have in each of the regions what we refer to as a regional training officer. And the regional training officer works with the lead training officer in those regions and formations ensuring that the trainings that are supposed to be done are done.”

A Director of Training has been named, stationed in Belmopan, who follows up with regional and formation commanders on identified needs and areas of training, after which a package is put together, sometimes with assistance from outside experts, the Commissioner said.
