Belizean Amado Cruz wins Final B in Men’s K1 1000 m canoe sprint at Pan American Games in Chile

Amado Cruz wins Final B in Men’s K1 1000m at Santiago 2023

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean Amado Cruz won the Final B in the Men’s K1 1000m canoe sprint at Laguna Grande at San Pedro de la Paz at the Pan American Games in Chile early on Saturday morning and is now ranked 9th in the Americas.

“This ranks him 9th in the Americas,” the Belize Canoe Association said.

“Great achievement for our young sport canoe sprint. Congrats Amado. You have made us all proud. You represented our country Belize well.”

Amado clocked three minutes, 51.69 seconds (3:51.69) and beat Chilean Miguel Ariel Valencia (3:51.88), who attacked at the last moment, by 0.19 of a second.

Venezuelan Ray Acuña led for the first three quarters of the race, but Amado attacked him and left him behind. Valencia gained positioning and threatened Amado at the very end but the Belizean paddler prevailed.

Puerto Rican Eddy Barranco was third in 3:53.49.

According to the format, the top eight compete in Final A for medals and those who don’t make it, compete in Final B for ranking. Thus, by winning Final B, Amado placed ninth in the Pan American ranking.

Earlier in the week, Amado finished fifth in the first round  in 3:58:58 and then placed third in in 3:56.51. Today was his fastest time.

According to BCA president Elvin Penner, clocking 3:56.51, Amado missed qualifying to Final A by one hundredth of a second clocking 3:56.51 behind Cuban Reyler Patterson’s 3:56.50. Penner said it was so close that he requested to see the video but agreed that the judges were right.

Earlier in the week, Amado finished fifth in the first round Heat 1 in 3:58:58 before his third place in Semifinal 2.

Today was his fastest time.
