Leader of the Opposition addresses graduates of Fortis College; honors late grandmother’s legacy

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow has told graduates of the class of 2023 at Fortis College, based in Columbia, South Carolina, to go forward and contribute to society by being “the love and light in someone’s path.”

The school has an emphasis on the health sciences, including nurses, medical assistants, dental assistants, and heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) technicians. Addressing them, Barrow recalled his grandmother Esme Diaz, who he said “ultimately accomplished her childhood dream of becoming a registered nurse in her 50s after years of childcare and housekeeping as many immigrants from that generation initially earned their living. She empowered herself with not just a skill set, but her dream profession.”

For that reason, not to mention the work health care workers put in on the frontlines of the COVID pandemic, he commended the outstanding individuals who share stories of “disruption, disappointments, devastation and setbacks, but they all chose perseverance and resilience” and are now ready after their studies “to continue their journey equipped with the skill set not just to sustain themselves but make their unique contributions to society.”

He concluded, “As you go forth do so with integrity, character, compassion, kindness, and honesty in all you do for professional accomplishments without the purpose of positively impacting all you come in contact with will lead to a life of emptiness and despair. We are all a part of a whole thus conditioning your minds to align with the divine truth that using your skill set to take care of your patients, your clients, and your communities is, in essence, taking care of yourself. Do not be distracted by the lies of disorder and darkness…..the only truth is love and light…..be the love and light in someone’s path.”
