By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize is planning to have the back match between Port Layola and the Belmopan Bandits played on Thursday, November 23, at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence.

The match was postponed last Saturday due to the poor condition of the pitch at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City, though Port coach Charlie Susher disagreed. Slusher said the game was playable as the pitch wasn’t as bad as the PLB made it out to be.

Whichever way the match can’t be played this week for two reasons. One of them is that the Bandits will be playing their back match against Altitude on Thursday at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence. The other reason is that the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) are playing French Guiana on Friday and St Vincent and the Grenadines on Tuesday. So, even though there are no weekend PLB games on Saturday and Sunday, the game can’t be played then because Port have three key players in the BMNT, namely goalkeeper Charles Tillett, midfielder Latrell Middleton, and forward Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton. The Bandits’ forward Jonard Castillo is also with the BMNT.

Additionally, while back matches are normally played on Wednesday, next Wednesday, November 22, is out of the question because the BMNT will more than likely be arriving home that day from Grenada where they’ll play St Vincent and the Grenadines on Tuesday.

Therefore, the PLB is tentatively setting the match for Thursday, November 23 at 7:30 pm at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City.

With one more weekend of action left in the regular season, the PLB wants to play all back matches before the weekend of the 25th and 26th.

The match is key to Port’s playoff bid. While the seventh-place Bandits didn’t qualify for the playoffs this season, they want to finish the season with a better record than they now have.
